Corey King had the size and ability to be a Div. I football recruit. He didn’t have the test scores. Once, twice, three times he failed the ACT, one of the requirements to participate in college athletics. He committed to Florida International, but couldn’t sign a letter of intent because of his test scores. FIU backed off, as did other programs, leaving King, a 6-foot-2, 270-pound All-Area defensive tackle, without a clear football future. But King’s efforts paid off. On his fourth try, he passed the ACT. When Miami, Pitt and Eastern Michigan visited West Boca’s campus over the last week to inquire about junior linebacker Ja Wand Blue, they asked Bulls coach Willie Dodaro if he had any other under-the-radar or otherwise uncommitted players.

All three schools saw King’s video, and all three plan to offer him scholarships pending the NCAA Clearinghouse confirming King’s eligibility. Miami is King’s favorite, and both Pitt and EMU are pushing for him. Dodaro said it’s unclear where FIU stands.

“It’s neat for him,” Dodaro said, adding he’s never had a player go Div. “Most people gave up on him, but he hung in there. The administration, his teachers, we were all pulling for him. He wanted it bad.”

At Miami, King could play right away, as Canes coach Al Golden has expressed concern with his team’s depth at defensive tackle.

King would compete at DT with three players with local ties: Micanor Regis (Pahokee), Luther Robinson (Fort Pierce Westwood) and Jeremy Lewis (Palm Beach Lakes).
